Dorik

Best Overall

#1 Dorik

Starting Price: $4.00
Ease of Use (of 10): 9
Templates: 60+
Hosting Included: Yes

Our Rating: 9.80 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score
Excellent

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$4.00 – $54.08No personal branding available in basic planYes, Branded

Is Dorik easy to use?

Dorik is a a drag-and-drop builder, so it’s about as user friendly as possible. What really differentiates Dorik is its availability of 60+ templates, 250+ blocks (aka columns, tables, paragraphs, buttons), and 20+ plus customizable elements. It also has animation features you can use to create an engaging experience for your users.

We primarily rank it #1 because it’s extremely easy to use, the customer service is top-tier, and you don’t have to worry about 100s of features that only advanced users will need — all this without sacrificing quality.

The Bottom Line

In a sentence, Dorik is an easy drag-and-drop website builder that you can use without coding, and more importantly, it provides a bunch of features, has great customer service, and won’t cost you an arm and a leg at only $4 on the entry-level plan.

Wix

Best for Website + App Solution

#2 Wix

Is Wix easy to use?

I personally know the chairman of the board at Wix, so I’m slightly biased. But opinions aside, Wix an excellent option for beginners as it has been for the past half-decade.

Wix uses a grid-based drag-and-drop builder, which requires a small learning curve if you’re an absolute beginner. BUT, the flip side of the coin is it provides an extreme amount of control over your site design without sacrificing cross-device adaptability. In any case, that only applies to sophisticated sites, so newbies can get started with little delay.

Perhaps most important, Wix has a website + app integration, so you always have that option available in the future. Other builders aren’t as flexible.

One other thing: due to the grid-nature editing wouldn’t recommend it for those who “don’t have a creative bone in their body,” but you can always lean on Wix’s professional marketplace to help you get things in place.

Wix is also fundraising for the war in Ukraine, so that’s an added bonus!

The Bottom Line

With 900+ templates and 1000s of tools, Wix provides huge learning opportunities for beginners without marginalizing you from the start. You can get a website up in one day, then build and improve using built-in AI suggestions, hire help, or learn over time without sacrificing fundamental quality.

GoDaddy

Best for Accepting Payments

#3 GoDaddy

Starting Price: $9.99

Our Rating: 9.75 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

$9.99 – $29.99Cannot list products in basic planYes, Branded

Is GoDaddy easy to use?

Yes, GoDaddy site builder is very easy to use. GoDaddy was first a hosting site, so it build a business on observing pain points for WordPress users and optimized a site builder based on that feedback.

It’s a drag-and-drop editor like the others with excellent customer service. You can evolve with the service over time. The serious advantage with GoDaddy is you can accept payments on the basic plan ($9/month), which most others require a pricier plan to do.

The Bottom Line

Like Wix, GoDaddy provides site + app integrations and probably more functionalities than you’ll ever need, but it allows payment processing on the basic $9.99 plan, which makes it perfect for those who want or need to sell from day 1.

Mobirise

Best Offline Builder

#4 Mobirise

Starting Price: $3.25
Ease of Use (of 10): 8
Templates: 200+

Our Rating: 9.70 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$3.25 – $12.42These are the monthly range prices of a single add-on, but you can get the full suite for $150/year — much lower than other buildersYes, but No Hosting

Is Mobirise easy to use?

Mobirise is a desktop application, rather than a browser-based builder, that leverages over 7000+ templates, blocks, and elements. It’s extremely easy to use and is especially helpful for those who like to have software directly on their computer, which can be used on- and off-line.

Unlike Wix and GoDaddy, Mobirise maintains a lower number of features, making it easier to understand for true beginners. It’s completely free to download, making money instead from paid add-ons such as Twitch and YouTube feeds, as well as Paypal shopping carts.

The reason we rank Mobirise 4rth and not higher is you will have to purchase your own hosting because the offline editor doesn’t hold your site for you, which is what enables it to keep prices lower.

The Bottom Line

The basic idea with Mobirise is the drag-and-drop editor is as simple as any, but the add-ons store makes it very easy for you to learn as you go and not get bogged down in excessive features.

Pixpa

Best for Portfolio Websites

#5 Pixpa

Starting Price: $3.60
Ease of Use (of 10): 9
Templates: 150+
Hosting Included: Yes

Our Rating: 9.65 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$3.60 – $15.00No blogging available in the basic planNo

Is Pixpa easy to use?

Customer testimonials say it all. Pixpa “hits the perfect balance between ease of use & advanced functions.” With over 150+ templates, 24/7 live support, and a single-view all-in-one visual editor, the interface is more than easy for true beginners.

There is no blogging available in the basic plan, which we consider a must for any eCommerce business. That said, designers and photographers who don’t need the blogging functionality should consider Pixpa a strong candidate for their business.

The Bottom Line

Pixpa’s all-in-one visual editor is an excellent choice for designers and photographers who don’t need much blogging functionality. And when they do, an upgrade to the $15/month plan is still more affordable than other options on the list.

Startup (Owned by DesignModo)

Best for Landing Pages

#6 Startup

Starting Price: $8.33
Ease of Use (of 10): 10

Our Rating: 9.60 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score
Excellent

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$8.33 – $20.67Only 20 exports/month on basic planYes, Limited Features

Is Startup easy to use?

Yep, Startup by DesignModo packs all the experience of its mother company in delivering high-quality no-code site builder BUT makes it super easy by focusing on landing page development.

When you focus on a single page (often with all the details conveniently stacked, kind of like this article 😆), the learning curve is much smaller and you can get a truly beautiful site up and running in a day.

This is another example of a site builder that’s not overrun with features that only create noise and won’t bring you much value as a beginner.

The downside is that Startup doesn’t provide hosting for you, so you’ll have to get a host independently (though a simple integration with Static.app exists). If not for the inconvenience, we would rank it much higher.

The Bottom Line

Startup is ideal for those who want an easy-to-build landing page for a portfolio or small business that they can grow with a blog, all for only $8.33 starting price.

Google Website Builder

Best for Playing Around

#7 Google Sites

Starting Price: $0.00
Ease of Use (of 10): 9
Templates: 5+
Hosting Included: Yes

Our Rating: 9.5 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score
Great

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$0.00 – $0.00No tiers — Google Sites is freeYes, Open Source

Is Google Sites easy to use?

It feels ironic to say a Google product is only good for playing around, but the tech giant has not done much to incentivize you to build your site with them. The functionalities are limited and it only has 5 or so templates.

But, hosting is included and it’s 100% free, so if you don’t plan on turning your site into a full fledged business, Google Sites is a greate way to get started and learn no-code site building.

The Bottom Line

Due to its limited functionalities, Google Sites is really only useful as a learning tool. It’s ideal for those who don’t want to pay, are familiar with Google apps, and don’t plan to grow the business.

Blocs

Best for Mac Users

#8 Blocs

Starting Price: $99.99
Ease of Use (of 10): 9
Templates: 60+
Hosting Included: No

Our Rating: 9.50 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$99.99 – $149.98Only basic functions available in base package, so we highly recommend the full kit at $149Nope, because it’s not a subscription model

Is Blocs easy to use?

True to its name, Blocs is a “block” editor like many others. It’s designed specifically for Mac and like Mobirise is a desktop app that you can use on- or offline.

More importantly, it’s not a subscription service. You buy it outright and own it for life, including future upgrades (so you won’t get stuck with outdated software like with Microsoft Office). The downside, like with Mobirise, is that hosting is not included.

The interface is unique as a dark-tone layout so you can easily see your site within the visual editor, which many people including programmers have come to greatly appreciate. Here’s a video to help you get an idea (totally owned by Blocs and use for marketing purposes only):

The Bottom Line

If you’re on Mac, Blocs is the best option for you unless you’re seriously averse to buying your own hosting.

Siter (Owned by DesignModo)

Best for Figma Integration

#9 Siter

Starting Price: $12.00
Ease of Use (of 10): 8
Templates: 0 (Figma dependent)
Hosting Included: Yes

Our Rating: 9.45 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score
Excellent

Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$12.00 – $39.00Basic plan only has 1 access & 5 forms, versus unlimited on advanced plansNo

Is Siter easy to use?

The thing is, yes, Siter.io is easy to use for designers new to website building.

However, it’s not extremely accessible for absolute beginners because its a free-form design platform. Designers will be familiar with how this works and integrate FIgma, but it’s not appropriate for the technophobe.

There are no templates, which is good for designers, but not so much for people like me.

The Bottom Line

Siter is a strong choice for designers or those who are well versed in free-form creation but not appropriate for absolute beginners.

Strikingly

Best for Beginner Designers

#10 Strikingly

Starting Price: $8.00
Ease of Use (of 10): 8
Templates: 200+

Our Rating: 9.45 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score
Bad

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$8.00 – $49.00The basic plan will have the Strikingly brand on itNo

Is Strikingly easy to use?

Strikingly is a decade-old site builder that targets users who want “simplicity and style,” which roughly translates to flexible designing for those with a creative vein but not much experience. The features are limited, so you won’t get overwhelmed. The major downside to Strikingly is its customer service. Today, it almost doesn’t exist despite claims of “24/7” customer service.

The Bottom Line

Strikingly is not the greatest option on the list, but it will suite the needs of beginner designers who want to explore the creation process. Just keep in mind that the basic plan will include Strikingly branding (most builder only oblige branding on free plans).

Carrd

Best for One-Page Sites

#11 Carrd

Starting Price: $1.58
Ease of Use (of 10): 9
Templates: 12+

Our Rating: 9.40 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score
Great

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$1.58 – $1.58No tiers — just $19/year or $1.58/monthYes, Branded

Is Carrd easy to use?

Carrd is extremely easy to use and is a go-to option for many small businesses given the simplicity of a “one-page” site. In fact, we would rank Carrd in the top five… if it had built-in blog functionality. Because it doesn’t, you won’t be able to grow traffic without integrating a 3rd party service. That’s a no-no in our view.

The Bottom Line

Carrd represents a nice choice for those who want a single-page site that’s easy, inexpensive, and visually appealing, and most importantly, don’t require a blog.

mmm

Best for Personal Sites

#12 mmm

Starting Price: $15.00
Ease of Use (of 10): 8

Our Rating: 9.35 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

Is mmm easy to use?

See for yourself — mmm’s homepage let’s you immediately experiment with its functionalities. The interface is easy to understand and recalls very PowerPoint-style editing. What really sets mmm apart is a focus on “messy” designs, which are awesome for building personal brand websites.

The Bottom Line

mmm is best for building personal sites that don’t conform to traditional design standards and prefer an artistic flair.

Zyro (Hostinger)

Best Price-to-Value Ratio for Independents

#13 Zyro

Starting Price: $2.59
Ease of Use (of 10): 8

Our Rating: 9.30 / 10

Rating: 9 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score
Great

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$2.59 – $3.59No eCommerce available in the basic planNo

Is Zyro easy to use?

Zyro is designed for personal websites and small online stores, and its entire interface suits the needs of beginners, whether individual or small business. Online reviews speak to how well Zyro does its job, with a TrustPilot score of great despite facing huge competition.

It does have blog functionality, but you have to choose the right template and tweak it, which we’re not big fans of because blogs are the core of growth. That said, with a 30 day money back guarantee you can always try it risk free.

The Bottom Line

Zyro is made for personal websites and small online store, packs100+ templates, and costs under $4/month, making it a strong candidate if you’re not dead set about blog functionality.

WordPress

Is WordPress easy to use?

I’ve been using WordPress to build AnalystAnswers.com for years. Why do I use a service ranked so low on the list? Two reasons: (1) WordPress provides more backend flexibility/development collaboration than any other builder, and (2) other builders don’t provide enough added value for WordPress users to make the switch.

In short, what I’m saying is WordPress is not easy to pick up, but once you crest the learning curve, you’ll have the skills, knowledge, and intuition to produce high-caliber sites with almost any builder. WordPress is the Navy Seals training of no-code site building.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is WordPress is the best option for technophiles — those who like and have experience working with IT systems.

Squarespace

Best for Fans

#15 Squarespace

Starting Price: $16.00
Ease of Use (of 10): 7

TrustPilot Score

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$23.00 – $49.003% transaction fees on basic plan ($23/month plan, not the $16/month one)No

Is WordPress easy to use?

Yes, the Squarespace interface block editor is easy to use. The problem is its customer service. Like any company Squarespace goes through normal tech lifecycles during which it releases software updates and makes price adjustments… but its notorious for a lack of communication. Many have complained of auto-renewed payments without email warning, price hikes, and interface changes without notifying customers.

At the end of the day, Squarespace built its reputation on offering an excellent interface with payment processing on the basic plan in exchange for 3% transaction fees. Today, there are better options.

The Bottom Line

Squarespace is a solid option, but when we look at the data to compute our score, there’s no real reason to go with Squarespace over say GoDaddy, Dorik, or Wix. For $16, we would expect more.

Jimdo

Best for German Market

#16 Jimdo

Starting Price: $9.00
Ease of Use (of 10): 5

Our Rating: 8.95 / 10

Notable Client*

Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$9.00 – $14.002 day customer service on basic planYes, Branded + Ads

Is Jimdo easy to use?

Jimdo is a German site builder, and it provides customer service in German. This means its probably the best choice for those in the German market because they will be able to get help. That said, Jimdo’s interface it quite limited and its English customer service has had trouble, so we wouldn’t recommend it for everyone.

The Bottom Line

Jimdo is the best site creator for those in Germany.

ReadyMag

Best for Dynamic Grids (Not Blocks)

#17 ReadyMag

Starting Price: $13.50
Ease of Use (of 10): 7

Our Rating: 8.95 / 10

Rating: 8 out of 10.

TrustPilot Score
Good

Notable Client*
Plan Price RangeJustificationIs a free version available?
$13.50 – $58.50Only 1 website available on basic planYes, Branded

Is ReadyMag easy to use?

ReadyMag is one of the easier to use on our list. It uses dynamic grids and 100% animation of all widgets, elements, and block. That flexibility makes it a great choice for creative minds.

Why don’t we rate it higher?

The price is a little steep for the number of templates and structural elements available. While that may not seem important for you as a beginner, you could find yourself stuck as your site capabilities evolve.

The Bottom Line

ReadyMag’s dynamic grid and element animation features make it an excellent choice for “creative” minds, but the limited number of features could limit your long-term growth strategy.

Shopify

Best for Stores

#18 Shopify

Starting Price: $29.00

Is Shopify easy to use?

Shopify wouldn’t be a tech giant if it weren’t easy to use. It’s certainly intuitive for shop builders. The problem is it has very limited functionality and bad customer service. So yes, the interface is good but we don’t put Shopify high on the list due to these limitations.

The Bottom Line

If you want to build a simple store and avoid blogging altogether, then Shopify may be right for you.

Sheet2site

Best for Google Sheet Users

#19 Sheet2site

Starting Price: $49.00

Is Sheet2site easy to use?

Sheet2site has a cool take on site building: use Google sheet templates that you’re familiar with to create a website you want. The advantage is that you don’t need to learn a new system to make it work. We don’t rank it very high, though, because… it’s expensive.

The Bottom Line

If you’re working and comfortable with Google Sheets and don’t want to learn a new platform, Sheet2site is a good candidate for your business.

Berta

#20 Berta

The Bottom Line

The only real reason to choose Berta is if you want an experience catered to independent photographers.

Is Mailchimp easy to use?

Mailchimp is an email marketing service that recently opened a site building functionality. It’s a good choice for those who already have large email lists, but otherwise we don’t recommend using this builder.

The Bottom Line

Mailchimp’s site builder is a good choice if you already have a large email list, and better if it’s with Mailchimp.

What are website builders?

Website builders are browser or desktop programs that use drag-and-drop elements (i.e paragraphs, tables, & images) within a template or grid so creatives and business owners can create professional websites without needing to code.

They can be more or less involved. Some builders simply allow you to plug code snippets into your project, whereas with others you will never see a line of code. The degree of involvement depends on the end user. Startups may want more control over the underlying code, whereas people like you and me just want to control the design.

How does a website builder work?

The best way to understand how website builders work is to look at origin. Web developers grew tired of rewriting code in different languages to produce the same websites, so they developed other code to automate the process.

Over time, that “other” code evolved into snippets they could integrate into their workflow from a separate database, and today the result is drag-and-drop functions that automatically write code behind the scenes so you don’t have to.

In other words, website builders use friendly interfaces to interpret creators’ needs and write code behind the scenes.

There are two types of website builders: no-code vs low-code. No-code builders require zero interaction between the user (you) and the literal lines of programming language. Low-code builders allow, but don’t require, some interaction between the user and lines of code.

Should you use a website builder?

The question of whether you should use a website builder is no longer a practical question. Today, even big tech companies use some form of low-code website builders to streamline their workflows. Everybody should use a website builder. If not, you put yourself at a competitive disadvantage.

How to Choose a Website Builder

There are tons of criteria to consider when you shop for a website builder, including hosting, access to the backend, grid vs block interface, compatibility with your computer, upgradability, customer service, price, and more.

Scoring & Ranking Methodology

We score each option on this list as follows. For quantitative metrics, by relative distance to the mean via standard deviation and percentile ranking. For qualitative metrics, by feedback after testing each option. For binary metrics (like free version availability), by assigning a +/- point. Each ranking then goes through a “gut check” to ensure you’re getting the most comprehensive yet human review possible.

Beware FREE Plans

Here’s the thing about free plans. Everybody wants one, and no company wants to give one. They provide free plans, but these almost always have a branded domain (think “yourbrand.companybrand.com”), ads, and limited features.

And if that weren’t enough, you wouldn’t be the first person to dedicate serious time working on a free site, need to upgrade, and end up losing your work because the free plans don’t transfer well. Even if they do, the superior features you gain access to create “patters” on your site, and you’ll end up having to go back and replace your original work.

This happened to me with AnalystAnswers — I created over 40 links, then had to go back and change them all to buttons. Sometimes this still haunts me…

Jokes aside, if you just want to play around, free options are great. But for anything more, think it over.

Pricing – We Normalize Everything to Monthly Price

Brands don’t always show their pricing on a monthly basis, opting for yearly or quarterly intervals. We normalize everything to monthly payments, even if you have to pay upfront in higher amounts. Keep that in mind as you visit each site.

FAQ

Which website builder is best for artists & photographers?

Artists and photographers needs graphically intense visuals. After reviewing over 30 site builders, we think these are the best site builders for artists and photographers:

  • Pixpa (Best for Portfolio Websites)
  • Siter (Owned by DesignModo) (Best for Figma Integration)
  • mmm (Best for Personal Sites)
  • Zyro (Hostinger) (Best Price-to-Value Ratio for Independents)
  • ReadyMag (Best for Dynamic Grids)
  • Berta (Best Quick Solution for Independent Photographers)

Which website builder is best for small business?

Versoly is our top overall pick for small businesses. That said, it’s not what we call an “easy” site builder. If you want easy, we recommend Dorik.

Which website builders include custom domains?

Any paid website builder provides customer domains. The exceptions are site builders that don’t include hosting (see list under next question).
